Barry and Ed Show Their Class

Performer’s Night 2nd September 2010

Well, can it really be that a whole week has gone by since our last meeting and I haven’t sent out my post club email? I’m sure that you have all been on the edge of your seats waiting!!

I’ve had yet another birthday since last week and I’m struggling to remember who was there!! We did welcome back Gareth who went home with the lovely Karine Palwart, well, her CD anyway! It was also good to see the excellent Barry again especially as he was accompanied by the equally excellent Ed who made his debut at the club. We were all left with a sneaky suspicion that these two might just have performed together before! What a great performance they dished up with songs ranging from upbeat chorus songs to the utterly gobsmacking Ballad of Willie McBride (I’ve always called it this even though I know it is not the correct title). That song is up there with The Band Played Waltzing Matilda as the most powerful of anti-war songs and it was beautifully performed by Barry and Ed.Ed had an eventful night as he also got plenty of laughs for his jokes and scooped the Welsh Recipes Tea Towel in the raffle!

Also great to see Tarmac again after a long break from the club. Not so long next time Tarmac!

The programme is now finalised right through to next spring. We have lots of performers nights, two feature nights where Simon and Ric will perform extended spots, a charity night in January for a great local children’s charity and some class class guests in Dan Walsh and Will Pound, Tom Kitchen and Gren Bartley and Isambarde. Do have a look at www.shirley-folk-club.org.uk for full details of the programme and get the dates in your diaries.

Our next meeting is on 23rd September and it is the big launch of the autumn season – yes, it’s Bring Some Folk Night. The challenge is for everyone to bring at least one extra person with them and pack the room for a great night. A few surprises are already lined up so don’t miss it!!
