Ray’s chat 46

Hi Folks
It’s RAYS CHAT Forty Six

Yes here we are it’s SUMMER:
And When Summer is GOOD. It Can be GREAT!
The sun was shining I sat on my patio with a glass of Sangria and a Tappas lunch.. with This playing:
Put in: STEPHEN WARBECK PELAGIA’S SONG 4.09
OK Maybe not Folk; But: This is what Summer is about.

So let’s see what Summer Folk Songs I can find??
Well YES: here is a real Oldie that I remember singing as a kid.
Put in: MISSISIPI JOHN HURT – YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE 2.13
Well it’s traditional But I am not impressed. Never heard it before and it won’t be on my play again LIST.

And For the next one: Well this is going back to 1957, when it was VERY popular on the radio. Yes History!
Oh it was played a lot. We loved it. Great Song.
Although I don’t remember it ever being sung in any Folk Club I was in!!
But it is a traditional Folk Song; sung by a very famous Folk Singer; and is well worth listening to: Put in:
HARRY BELAFONTE – ISLAND IN THE SUN 2.55

Nice Song and Harry really knows how to sing!!
YES this really was a Big Hit for him.
In fact Harry was really Big in the 60’s; But he got into trouble with the USA authorities during the Communist Purges.
Another of his big hits was the Banana Boat Song
Born in 1927, He is 90 now. Yes still alive..

Surprisingly: there are not Many Songs about SUN that I can remember,
Except maybe the House of the Rising Sun.
And I would not have thought that was Folk??!!
YES: But it is Folk!
And there are many Folk singers who have sang it;
Here are just a few: Lead Belly; Ronnie Gilbert.
and JOAN BAEZ,, Yes She sang it:
So Put in:
Joan Baez – House Of The Rising Sun 3.08.

Then searching for SUN, again; I found this: Put in:
WE’LL SING IN THE SUNSHINE – GALE GARNETT – 1964 2.58
I had never heard this song before!! No never. Nor the Singer
But it’s catchy..
although I suppose maybe more Country than Folk..
But; I like it; So YES That’s in.

Then I found this next one..
THIS is: Another song I had never heard before.
OK: YES, It’s more Country than Folk.
But I really like this one
and it is so beautifully performed by some very famous Women Country Singers.
YES: I just got to have this one:
Put in:
Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton – You’ll Never Be the Sun 4.45
Yes I really liked that one. Beautifully sung.
So you’ll have to forgive me for adding it to Rays Choice.
Even though it is not really Folk.

But Surely?? there MUST BE some Folk Songs with SUN in title?? Ohh YES: I have found a song written by Gordon Lightfoot. And He is a Folk Singer.
So Put in
GORDON LIGHTFOOT – SUNDOWN 3.43

Mmm!! Well I am not surprised I never heard this before..
NO IT hasn’t done anything for me!!.
And I don’t really bother if I never hear it again..
It is definitely NOT going on my list of Songs I want to hear again.

Then I found this: Put in
SLIM WHITMAN WALKING IN THE SUNSHINE 2.30
Slim Whitman was a very popular singer in the 60’s and made lots of recordings.
And indeed I liked many of his songs.
Rose Marie was a very famous song by him.
But I have to say this WALKING IN THE SUNSHINE Does NOT rate with me. I had never heard the song before.
And won’t be bothering to play it again..
Well we really are digging deep. AND not finding much in the way of Folk Songs about the Sun?!!.

BUT: There is ONE song that we can definitely say is a
Put in GREAT song About Sun
YES: A Truly GREAT song that will be a joy to hear again:
Put In JOHN DENVER… SUNSHINE ON MY SHOULDERS 5.29
Oh YES YES:
This has to be THE BEST Sunshine Song.
Lovely Song and So beautifully sung.
This is definitely a Song I want on my listen again list.

And: Sometime you might get to hear it sung at the Shirley Red Lion Folk Club.
And that will be something Special.

So: We have done some
Wandering looking for the Sun!!
Next time:
Let’s think of Holidays.
And Now: It’s Goodbye Time
Nice Chatting to you,
 RAY
