First Ray’s chat of 2018

Hi Folks
It’s RAYS CHAT Thirty Six
Yes here we are at Chat Thirty Six.
What a GREAT night it was on 5th Jan with the 60’s 70’s Night.
We had some real GREAT performances. Definitely MY kind of night.
So: I thought we would look back, over the Rays Chats. We have wandered through a lot of Folk Songs since Chat One. Do you remember the first Song I talked about ?? NO of course not..
Well it was CARRICK FERGUS.

And indeed YES it was a GREAT first choice. Certainly one of the Greatest Irish Folk Songs.
And I had you listen to a very Great Irish singer. Jim Mccann.
OH Yes: let’s hear that again
Put in: JIM McCANN CARICKFERGUS 4.27
Oh What a GREAT Song.
And Jim is one of the Greatest Folk singers.
He was with the DUBLINERS for many years.. Oh YES.
And Yes the DUBLINERS were Fantastic Folk Singers.
YES: We should have something by them!!
AH! But which song out of the many they recorded??

I know!!; it has to be WILD ROVER.
Oh the many times I have sung my heart out singing this song.
Put in: THE DUBLINERS – WILD ROVER 3.02

Certainly has to go to top of my list as one of the Greatest ever Chorus Folk songs. Yes the Dear Old Wild Rover.. Great Song!

How do you follow that?.
Well maybe a Gentle Folk Song by a Lady singer??
And again in those early RAYS CHAT2; I introduced you to ANITA CARTER. She is one of the Carter Family who were there right at the start of the Folk Scene in USA. So lets hear: ALL MY TRIALS: A Gentle Folk Song just perfectly sung.
Put in: ANITA CARTER – ALL MY TRIALS 2.56. Superb!!!: Oh so gently sung a very hard to beat recording, But then Joan Baez sang it..
Put in: JOAN BAEZ – ALL MY TRIALS
How do you choose from two wonderful singers?
Can YOU Choose?

WOW!! This is getting to be a real trip Down Memory Lane for me:
In RAYS CHAT 3 I talked about JUDY COLLINS.
I never saw Judy live.
But SHE is one of the GREATS; and I gave you her singing the Pete Seeger song TURN, TURN, TURN.
Yes let’s hear that again Put in:
JUDY COLLINS TURN TURN TURN (1966) mp4 4.36
Lovely Song; superbly sung. Judy has such a lovely voice.
This is truly one of the Greatest Folk recordings ever.
How can I hope to follow that??
In RAYS CHAT4 I did follow it with a very Sad Folk Song; that is almost the second National Irish Song:
Yes I am talking about THE FIELDS OF ATHENRY; And as we are on Lady Singers Lets hear a superb Irish Singer MARY DUFF.
PUT IN: THE FIELDS OF ATHENRY MARY DUFF 4,48
OHH!! What a superb recording of this very Powerful REAL story.
This is a superb Folk Song.

Then in CHAT6 I talked about Two Greats.
Joni Mitchel and Tom Rush.
Both of whom I had been lucky enough to see and hear at the JUG OF PUNCH FOLK CLUB.
(I still can recall their superb performances.)

So let’s remember Joni Singing HER Own song THE CIRCLE GAME.
Put in: Joni Mitchell The Circle Game 4.51
A nice gentle song and so beautifully sung by Joni..
and remember SHE wrote it. WOW!
And if you want a different version..
YES a real good version by Tom Rush; put in

Oh What a lovely version. So Gentle; and What superb Guitar playing.. and the video is good to.
This really is one of My favourites. Superb Song so beautifully performed..

In RAYS Chat8 I talked about one of My All Time Favourites
The Wonderful TOM PAXTON.. Still writing and singing songs today!! At the age of 81. And one of his Early songs that has always been TOP of my List: Is RAMBLIN BOY,
Put in: TOM PAXTON – RAMBLIN BOY 1964 4.05
This song is From his early recording days: Just simply sung; and it is Perfect!
I am so Lucky, I have this very record in my collection.

Then in Chat10, I talked about the KINGSTON TRIO.
They were formed in 1954 and sang Folk songs, and other songs. So the real Folk guys tended to say they were NOT FOLK.
But I loved them and the song I chose in Chat10 was Shenandoah
Put in THE KINGSTON TRIO SHENANDOAH 3.55
Make sure you get the 3.55 one. It is superbly sung and has a very lovely video. This is GREAT. Lovely Song beautifully performed.. YES Listen to this one.

Oh!!What Memories?
And how Lucky WE are; that this Magic of You Tube; give US the JOY of listening to these fabulous songs.
It truly IS a Modern Miracle.
And to finish: Let’s have a GREAT hit from 1967. YES that was the year IF YOU GO TO SAN FRANCISO released.
And became an instant Hit.. particularly with the “Hippies”.
I loved the song.. Well still do. Put in
