Ray’s chat 17

Hi Folks

It’s RAYS CHAT Seventeen.
Hi: Well don’t know about you; But I am fed-up with all this rain, rain; and dismal stuff: reckon I’m growing Web feet.
But it has made me think let’s do some Watery, Winterry Songs.
And of course the first that comes to mind is
THE WATERS ARE WIDE.
But OHH!! We hit problems. The Scots claim it;
The English say it is theirs. And even the Irish claim it.
And I’ve even found an American one claiming it is American!
Just one thing is certain is comes from about the 1600 time.
Yes a real Oldie.
And as it it is Tyneside; my guess is it is ENGLISH.

The first version I am talking about is an Updated version;
Yes it’s good, and the Video is Good. Try:
THE WATER IS WIDE – PETER HOLLENS 3.59
Yes: Great Song. BUT Peter is an American.. Don’t seem right having an American singing an English Song??
So I searched for Another version: AND I found a rather unexpected couple of guys singing it; Try this:
STING AND JIMMY NAIL THE WATERS OF TYNE
Yes;
Definitely British Singers. YES; Interesting; But I prefer the more Traditional..
and you’ll have a job to beat this one:
LINDA CALISE –THE WATER IS WIDE. 4.19
I have searched thro oh so many versions, and this is the one that Hit the spot for me. Yes do try this.. It is good. The BEST I found.. Hope you like it?.

Searching around for RAIN SONGS I came across this one that was NEW to me. Good Video too. This makes you think:
WHO’LL STOP THE RAIN –
CREADANCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL 2.22

But of course the one song about Rain that Most Folk people will know is: EARLY MORNING RAIN written by Gordon Lightfoot in 1964; and was a BIG hit in the Folk Clubs.
there are some good version on YOU TUBE With Gordon singing his own song; and even Elvis Presley; and to be honest Elvis made a good job of it;
But we ought to hear Gordon singing his own song:
There’s lots to choose from: But I chose:
GORDON LIGHTFOOT – EARLY MORNING RAIN 3.05
And says 4 years ago (but I think earlier than that)
Very Good version: Yes: well worth listening to.
Great song and some Great singing by the guy that wrote it.. Can’t be Bad?? YES This is the one

And talking about Rain.. Oh YES there is another Song immediately comes to mind. You must know it:

BROOK BENTON – RAINY NIGHT IN GEORGIA 4.02
Oh SO difficult to choose Lots of versions, by many singers.
But this is my favourite version
Wonderful Song with Magic singing.

What’s THAT?? You don’t reckon this is FOLK??
Well I don’t know where you draw the line; But this will do for me.

And there’s another song that the purists will say isn’t Folk.
But it is a great song that will live on: So I am saying:

YES Go on listen to:
ALBERT HAMMOND – IT NEVER RAINS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA,
Well it is a GREAT song and when I looked 9,752,700 people had viewed it. So Join the Happy gang.

YES well; we’ve chatted about Rain songs.
I wonder if there are any SUN Songs.
Well one that comes to mind i
Is that Great Song by John Denver
SUNSHINE ON MY SHOULDERS – JOHN DENVER 4.40
When I looked nearly 4.5 million people had viewed this on YOU TUBE.
And I guess there will be guys out there saying it is NOT FOLK. Well Tell you what!! You will find John Denver being sung in THE SHIRLEY RED LION FOLK CLUB.. SO THAT;S Good Enough for me. So listen and enjoy a Great Song Superbly sung.
Now I am going to chat about BOB DYLAN: Guess that’s going to feed the flame again: Was he Folk?? Well whatever he had a great influence on Folk Music.
Bob Dylan Wrote BLOWING IN THE WIND.. and was sung all over the Folk Clubs: A very Strong Song of the Protest Period..
Yes and it made you think. We need guys who can write like this: Yes it should be remembered:
Bob should be remembered.
BLOWING IN THE WIND – BOB DYLAN 2.3

But others sang it: Very good versions are too. JOAN BAEZ was one who did a GREAT job on the song. Lots of others:
But: Try the PETER PAUL AND MARY VERSION.
There are lots to choose from. I just chose the first that came up first taking just 3.01mins.
PETER, PAUL AND MARY BLOWIN IN THE WIND .

BUT; a BIG BUT. Don’t think I am only interested in the past.
I had the great pleasure of hearing a young Group at the Shirley RED LION CLUB. On 20th January 2017.
They were just FANTASTIC!!
I am so glad that we have Young Folk Groups keeping the Folk Scene Alive.

So: Another Chat Gone.
I hope I am helping
You find New things. Nice chatting to You
